Christina Aguilera Drawing by Live4ArtInLA Christina Aguilera Drawing by Live4ArtInLA
Photo of drawing. Prismacolor on Strathmore, using the powder brushing technique. Latest in my “Women Who Rock” drawing series. I seem to be drawing a lot of leather these days.

(No, those are not all the pencils used. Remember, this is a photo of the drawing, so the actual piece is a little rougher than this appears. No more posting actual scans - too much piracy.)

I have another question...do you color in the hair after or before you do the gray scale parts of the hair?

Looks perfectly blended!!! I was wondering... do you use anything special to blend so nicely your drawings? or you just make really soft strokes? I've bought this "color blender" stick thing but it just kinda smudges the colors in a weird way... :(

what is powder brushing technique

Powder brushing. I don’t use this technique all the time because I happen to like seeing a little bit of actual pencil strokes, but this is a great technique for smooth colour transitions, and to portray flawless or delicate skin.

Powder brushing is when you create powder from a coloured pencil and the powder is applied to your drawing much like makeup, in multiple, thin coats, creating almost an airbrush effect.

For this technique you need a small, metal tea strainer (you can also use an exacto knife, but this is much more time-consuming and hard on the leftover pencil), and Q-tips (or actual, small, soft-bristle makeup brushes for a more precise application).

Start with a good, soft lead pencil. Gently rub the pencil lead across the tea strainer over clean paper or a bowl, catching the coloured particles. After you have enough powder collected use Q-tips to apply the colour in a small, circular motion. To achieve transparency or luminosity, apply VERY little colour - you can always build up by adding more layers. If a shaving happens to leave a spot on your drawing you can dap a Q-tip into mineral spirits and apply to help dissolve the spot. Apply multiple layers, varying colours and blends to create depth and/or change the value. Try adding some white pencil shavings to your colour as well for a more delicate shade of your colour.

You can clean the strainer with a stiff toothbrush, but DON’T use water until you have brushed away all the leftover particles or you will contaminate the next color you use.

To be honest it's not QUITE as smooth as it appears in that image as that is a photo of the actual drawing. That said, I do spend a lot of time blending colours. I use any number of techniques, including a colourless blending pencil, burnishing, odorless mineral spirits - for this piece, for the skin tones, I used a powder brushing technique that has the pencil lead shaved into powder form and applied with a brush - much like makeup.

I prefer these photos to scans, they look so artistic with pencils around! I always wonder if you leave the black and white parts on purpose but I guess it's the way it should be. Very original!

You are pretty much the only artist I know that has to include pencils in her artwork to prove that it is indeed a drawing, not a photograph. Your artwork is inspiring and your skill level is something to die for.

beautiful piece but as to the scan issue, what is to prevent someone from cropping and using what you put in photo form?

There really isn't any perfect way to post something without the ability for it to be copied. But posting a scan only ups the resolution. Beyond very invasive watermarking, posting a photo of the piece at a much smaller size that the original, along with not activating the "download" option, requiring anyone stealing the piece to work from a another, further yet lower-generation of the original seems to be the best option beyond not posting at all.
