This is great. The only thing that would make this picture better is a ski mask.

You are just a phenomenal person, and I can't even describe your art, it's just unreal. Never stop drawing (Well, unless of course you get sick then please sit down, take a nap, drink some salsa and nachos (Yes, drink them) and rest) BUT NEVER STOP.

I like how you don't color all-over and then lay another layer on top and instead work in small sections, I see that when you do that, you have more opportunity to see if you have a shadow in the correct way or something like that.

All I have is the Prismacolor 12 packs, Varethin and Soft-Core. It's utter chaos trying to color humans with those things.

.... Maybe I'll draw an alien.

Addressing comments in comment order: "You are a phenomenal person." I don't know about phenomenal, but I'll accept "astonishing," and "exceptional" when applied to my personage. "I can't even describe your art." My art is nomenclature? (I love that word. Nomenclature. Thank you for giving me a reason to type it.) "Never stop drawing." Great. Now I have performance anxiety. Can I take bathroom breaks? Wait, there are conditions listed, let's go through those and see if bathroom breaks make the list.... Oh, "sickness," yes, good, "sit down" (Will do), "nap," (Check.) "drink some salsa and nachos," (Is there any other way?!), "rest," (I'll attempt.) "BUT NEVER STOP," (Damn, Ok, ok, calm down. Promise.) Thank you for agreeing with my technique. I catch an awful lot of flack for it, not that I pay critics any mind. I also hold writing instruments in an odd manner, so take THAT people!

Prismacolor should produce a set of pencils specifically for skin tones. Wait. Don't steal that idea. ™.

What if aliens are actually "skin-coloured?" Mind. Blown.

(Thanks for the best note of the day.)

i have a question do you edit your references for the colour or you" eye ball" the colours that you need to use for each piece??
Reply
:iconlive4artinla:
Live4ArtInLA Featured By Owner Jul 13, 2012
Both. Often I get the gist of the colouring from the reference, look for distinguishing colour marks (flecks, rim and surrounding pupil color) and work from that general colour palatte. I rarely match, especially the pieces I do in "odd - other colour" skin tone palettes. In the moment I don't have the reference photo this piece was drawn from, but all the colouring - eyes, skin, hair - is fairly exaggerated and different in the drawing.

Can I ask for a quick question? How do you overlay lighter colours so easily? I find it very difficult to get the colour to show on top (especially white/light strands on hair) cos the application underneath is already too waxy, I notice you just putting white on black hair and you make look so easy!

The under layers/strands are actually applied with a fairly light hand - just lots and lots of them. The few highlighted strands (in the white/lightest pink) are applied at the end, in heavier, quick, hard strokes. I think the trick is I use the softest variety of Prismacolors for most of my piece (Prismacolor Premiere set), while the very hard edges (like the lip outline) are done with Prismacolor Verithin pencils, which would never work as the highlighting pencils. Hope this helps.

I've been using both premier and verithin but had no luck, this helps a lot so I can't wait to try it out, so the trick is to not press hard with the foundation layer?

Thank you so much, you've been massive inspiration for me doing coloured drawings and also been a massive help.

I always feel the eyes can make or break a piece. That's why I always start my drawings by drawing them first. :)
